Dr. Assar earned a B.S. degree in biomedical engineering science from the University of Texas at Austin. He then attended the University of California School of Medicine in San Francisco, where he received the Gold Headed Cane Award, the highest honor given by faculty and classmates to a student who exemplifies the qualities of a ""true physician"".
