I grew up in a medical family; in fact, I’m a third-generation doctor. During my residency in the mid–1980s, there were great treatment advances in cardiology, gastroenterology, and pulmonology, but medical oncology seemed to be a forgotten area. Very few treatments were available for cancer. I chose to specialize in oncology and hematology because I wanted to contribute knowledge and energy to helping find a cure for people affected by cancer.
