Garrett grew up in the Salt Lake Valley, attended the University of Utah then went North to McGill University for their joint MD and Masters Degree in Surgery program. Seeking warmer climates he attended University of California San Francisco, Fresno in California for internal medicine, adult pulmonary medicine, and then adult critical care medicine.
